Abstract: Distributed systems research covers a wide spectrum of applications ranging across embedded real/time systems, commercial transaction systems, transportation systems, and military/space systems. Such systems are subject to some paradigms including coordination due to the absence of centralization, and too much uncertainly result of hardware of software behaviors, heterogeneity and son forth. Indeed, such systems raise several issues not found in single processor systems. The main difficulty arises when considering dependability, security, adaptability and resources constrained computing. This area requires computing systems to run software in an efficient and trustworthy way. That is, in order to be able to design complex architectures in reasonable time, novel and effective design methodologies are needed to automatically build applications from high-level descriptions to take into account what needs to be deployed on hardware. To remedy this weakness, combining both model and component seems to be a very promising cocktail for building solutions to this problem.

Abstract: The application of model-based engineering (MBE) methods for software and systems development in industry is increasing. Moreover, the integration of component-based approaches with MBE has further accelerated its adoption along with providing it with a sound theoretical foundation. The focus of this workshop is on the use of MBE for embedded systems development for example in the industrial transport sector for applications such as railway systems, automotive, aerospace, and related domains. In this context, special focus is given on MARTE, the UML profile for Modeling and Analysis of Real-Time and Embedded systems, which has been successfully adopted in several projects.
The aim of the workshop is to bring together researchers and tool developers from industry and academia to discuss on applications of model-based engineering to industrial application domains as well as on MARTE usage and on safety and MARTE.
Short minutes: (Statistics: 23 submitted papers 23, 13 accepted papers, More than 25 participants). We have had-high quality submissions. Authors have discussed the use of MARTE with respect to Power Management and code-generation. Papers (and talks) apply MARTE to specify real industrial systems (and hence introduced in the workshop). Moreover, we have had an industrial researcher that has highlighted the use of MARTE in a real industrial system. Feedback by participants, authors and conference organizations has been positive.

Abstract: The development of embedded systems with real-time and other critical constraints raises distinctive problems. In particular, development teams have to make very specific architectural choices and handle key non-functional constraints related to, for example, real-time deadlines and to platform parameters like energy consumption or memory footprint. In this context, the last few years have seen an increased interest in using model-based engineering (MBE) techniques. MBE techniques are interesting and promising for the following reasons: They allow to capture dedicated architectural and non-functional information in precise (and even formal) domain-specific models, and they support a layered construction of systems, in which the (platform independent) functional aspects are kept separate from architectural and non-functional (platform specific) aspects, where the final system is obtained by combining these aspects later using model transformations. The topics handled in the workshop were: Architecture description languages (ADLs); Domain specific design and implementation languages; Languages for capturing non-functional constraints; Component languages and system description languages.
